1. Research Title:

The title proposed my research is, “Study on Cultural Integration after Merger & Acquisition in Telecom Industry in India”.

2. Research Objective and Research Questions:

The objective of conducting this research is to understand how the merged entity in merger and acquisition manages the cultural integration issues internally and externally in telecom industry in India. In the line of the research objective, I will answer the following research questions:

* What are the cultural challenges faced by the merged entity after merger?

* Which factor is more critical to manager cultural issues in post merger?

* How the senior and middle management undertakes the cultural challenges in post merger?

* What are the methods and approach available for managing the cultural issues in post merger?

* Can the cultural issues be managed at pre merger stage?

3. Research Methods:

The suitable research method for the research study can be chosen out by research onion developed by Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill (2003). The research onion provides the guidance to the researcher to select the best methodology for conducting the research. A relevant research design includes the research philosophy, research approach and research strategy and selection of each section is described below:

3.1 Research Philosophy:

A researcher can either choose the interpretivism or positivism research philosophy based on the need and aim of the research objective. Since, the aim of the study is to identify the cultural challenges faced by the merged entity in post merger and it requires in-depth study of management, organizational structure and organizational behavior. Therefore I will use interpretivism research philosophy since the recommendation provided in the interpretivism approach is based on the collective findings of each related section and more into generalized format. I will not use the positivism research philosophy as it requires the specific study on research topic with single observation and specific recommendation (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe and Lowe, 2002).

3.2 Research Approach:

A researcher can select the deductive or inductive research approach based on the research philosophy and research aim. In this research I will use deductive approach as it is more suitable with the interpretivism research philosophy and supportive in providing the recommendation in the research and drawn the conclusion from the research findings (Saunders, Lewis, Thornhill, 2003).

3.3 Research Strategy:

The research strategy includes the approach for conducting the whole research work. In this research I will use both the qualitative and quantitative research methods. In qualitative approach I will conduct the secondary research for analyzing the organizational behavior and organizational structure of merged entities in telecom industry in India (Jankowicz, 1995). Further to analyze the cultural challenges in post merger I will support the findings from primary research under quantitative measures. Each of the data collection methodology is described below:

3.3.1 Secondary Research:

I will conduct the secondary research through various secondary sources such as company websites, research studies carried out on merger and acquisition, journals, articles and text books (Jankowicz, 1995).

3.3.2 Primary Research:

I will conduct the primary research with the senior and middle management in telecom industry in India. Since there are number of players present in the telecom industry in India and the recent merger was Vodafone with Hutchison Essar group. Therefore I will conduct the interviews with senior and middle managers in Vodafone to understand the cultural challenges in the company after merger. I will use the survey instruments as questionnaire to conduct this research which will include more of the close ended and 3-4 open ended questions.

3.4 Sampling:

I will use quota sampling in this research. Quota sampling is the non-probability counterpart of stratified sampling method. As stratified sampling method, the investigator primary recognizes the layers and their percentages because they are stand for in the populace. Then judgment otherwise convenience sampling is employed to choose the needed amount of topics from every layer. This varies from stratified sampling, where the layers are loaded through random sampling (Creswell and Miller, 2002). Since I need to interview senior and middle management in the company therefore I will use the following sample quota among each respondent category:

* Senior Management - 10 Interviews

* Middle Management - 20 Interviews

4. Topics to Be Covered:

I will cover the following topics in this research:

* Organization behavior

* Organization Structure

* Cultural Integration

* Merger and Acquisition Need

* Employees Issues

* Customer Issues

* Other Stakeholder Issues

5. Data Analysis:

I will analyze the data through presenting the case study of Vodafone in respect of cultural integration at post merger stage. The quantitative data collected through primary research will be analyzed through excel for calculating average, standard deviation and correlation analysis among the variables. The data will be presented through bar graphs and pie charts (Jankowicz, 1995).

6. Justification for Method Chosen:

The research study is focused towards the cultural issues faced by the merged entity in telecom industry in India. Therefore the research requires the thorough analysis and in-depth discussion from the research findings to achieve the desired aim of this research. Therefore I have used both the qualitative and quantitative approach under the theory of interpretivism and deductive research approach as the appropriate research design. This research design gives the clear path for achieving the research aim and answering all the research questions which have been provided above in this proposal.

7. Ethical Consideration:

Some of the ethical issues must be considered by the research while conducting a research work. A researcher must follow the guidelines provided by ESSOMAR, an association of market research companies. The respondent's id will not be disclosed in this research without prior permission from the respondent. There will be no monetary compensation to be provided to the respondent for filling the questionnaire to prevent the biased opinion. I will not enforce the respondent either physically or mentally participate in this research. I will not use the copyright material without any acknowledgement for such material in this research. I will bear all the rules and regulation laid down by the university and ESSOMR for conducting the research work.
